Let's Start at the Very Beginning...

On September 15th, Katy and Andy found out that Baby Jacob has a life-threatening condition called Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH). CDH is a very serious condition in which a hole in the diaphragm allows abdominal organs to move into the chest restricting lung development. In Jacob's case, his liver is also squishing his heart and displacing other organs. CDH occurs in about 1 out of every 3,000 pregnancies and has a mortality rate of 50%. To make matters more complicated, Jacob has Right-Sided CDH which only occurs in about 10% of CDH cases and is typically more severe. They are so blessed to have found this out when they did, or Baby Jacob would have surely died at birth.

They will be delivering at UW Hospital in Seattle and later transferred to Seattle Children’s. Thank you to everyone who has already begun praying, and everyone who will now. Baby Jacob is blessed to have all of you thinking and praying for him.

Happy Wean Holiday!

Dec 22, 2011 -Last night I was up all night with Jacob. He just feels yucky with withdrawal symptoms. He is nauseous and has been throwing up, is jittery, hypersensitive to stimulation and noise, yawning and sneezing more, and breathing heavier. He was awake almost the entire day yesterday too. Sometimes when he is withdrawing really badly, he will wake from a dead sleep with a shrill cry. Another sign Jacob is withdrawing is he will shake one leg like a dog getting his belly scratched or he will pump one fist like he's at a rock concert. Yes, sometimes we laugh cause otherwise we would just be crying all the time. He usually isn't fussing during these shakes so it doesn't always seem so upsetting. Luckily, he hasn't gotten to that point this time, and there will be no weaning of meds today. It's a Wean Holiday! : ) He also probably feels a little worse than normal due to the fact that he got two immunizations yesterday: Synagis for RSV and Pentacel (DTaP, IPV and Hib). Poor baby : (

  1. I think this picture really shows what you are talking about. I can almost feel how uncomfortable he is just by the picture alone. and two ouchies on his legs, poor little guy.
